In the past, I used to look for certain traits when making my decision to hire an employee. These included:

    Great credentials
    Entrepreneurial spirit
    Excellent technical skills
Great enthusiasm for the job at hand
Someone who could bring in their own clients

And, I can tell you unequivocably, I failed miserably in building a dream team based on the above characteristics. More often than not, I got serenity-busters. If you've been following my series, can you see the "prima donna" the "owner-wannabe" and the "ever innocent flake" in the above descriptions?

And, so here is my "David Letterman" top 10 list for traits of a dream-team employee. Here goes!
    10) Cares about the way they dress
    9) Gets along well with coworkers
    8) Allows you, the owner, to be you- no criticisms
    7) Has your back. (Will make sure you don't forget stuff, and when you do, they will handle it for you.)
    6) Has hobbies, other interests, f [...]

Last week in Part 1 of "What's Holding You Back?", I wrote about how competition can be paralyzing for people and how to stay focused on "your painting".

This week, I talk about failure. Yes, that F word.

About a year ago, I was talking to a friend/colleague about some of my upcoming projects. She said, "Ang, don't go down that route again. You tried to do it once and look how it flopped."

Huh? Flopped? I was shocked to hear her say that. It had never crossed my mind that something of mine had flopped. To this day, I cringe at that notion.

She had a point though. Although I had made money on the project, it wasn't amazingly profitable so I knew that the "flow of the universe" was not there. It was a matter of adjusting my project and refocusing my energy.

Fast forward to a few months later. I was shopping with another friend, and she casually said, "It's interesting... in all of the years that I've known you, one thing that I've noticed is that you don't acknowledge fai [...]

Don’t you love to start the day off energized and relaxed, knowing that wonderful surprises are coming your way?  How often do your days start that way though? If you answered that it isn’t as often as you’d like, here are some ideas to change that trend:

Today starts with a bit of organizing and prepaving the night before. Following is a glimpse into some things you could add to your evening (and morning) routine:

    1.       Make a list: Update your To Do list for the next day, noting anything you need to remember to bring with so you can run errands, and are fully prepared for anything else you plan to do.

-Put those things by the door where you will see them (even in a rushed, blurry state it's better to trip over them than to forget them, right?).

-Set out clothes for the next day (including a fresh pair of stockings so you aren’t searching frantically!). I’ve been wearing Wolford tights all winter-warm, stylish and don’t run!). Are your shoes polished? Need new heels? An [...]

Competition is a funny thing, isn't it? It can be paralyzing or it can be healthy.

I use it to fuel my fire.

I have always been one to thrive on competition. After all, I have Korean parents and was a concert pianist. Through extreme disciplined training, I learned the best way to deal with competition is to always surround yourself with the best of the best, play as hard as they do and don't pay too much attention to what's going on around you. Just outwork everyone else.

I want to share a story with you that I think many of you can relate to. The other day, I woke up to an email from a friend saying, Do you know that another woman entrepreneur (who you know) has launched a skincare line that looks just like yours... down to the packaging, marketing, descriptions, ingredients, and even pricing? She's completely ripped on your line!

Normally I wouldn't have really cared because... well, when you have a toddler demanding (correction: screaming) for water, an employee on the [...]

You may have noticed that I’ve been a bit quieter these past few weeks…this is due to the fact that I have been recruited for a project that requires me to be in an office for twelve weeks. Considering  I haven’t worked in an office for over ten years, this has been quite a switch for me…but what better opportunity than this to test all of the tips and techniques I’ve been sharing with all of you? And, to hone them so they are even more effective? And to develop new ones? YES! What a terrific synchronicity! So, I’m now getting up at 5:00am each morning (which used to be the time I’d roll over when my husband’s alarm went off) and going to the office.

It’s like being in another time zone! Not to mention pitch black outside…and here in Stuttgart, freezing cold in the middle of winter.  But, I digress…

I’ve learned to rearrange my schedule throughout the week and to let go of the need to get everything done, not to mention being perfect. The first week I just held onto my ha [...]

Here are some things to think about when scheduling PERSONAL time in your calendar!

Personal Tip: Insert one hour of unscheduled time into your week. Don’t panic! It is just one hour. The only planning this hour requires is getting it on your calendar. And then do… well… whatever you want to do or are called to do in that hour. Go with the flow. Fill the time based on your instincts in that moment. This is one of the most important tools I have to get “unstuck” in my life and my business. My clients hate the assignment and love the results. It stirs up so many “shoulds”- I “should finish that chapter”, “I should clean out the pantry”, etc. Instead, do what feels good at the top of that hour.

Insider scoop: I do this "unscheduled time" activity at least once a week- sometimes more when I need a dose of creativity.  I have been known to nap, take a walk in Central Park, read a few children’s books for inspiration, sort though my yarn to design my next knitting project, call a [...]

I just got done watching a short, homemade video that mega-star & producer Tyler Perry made called, "How To Be Successful". You can find it in a Youtube search. It was very uplifting and clear in its message.

Tyler has a rags-to-riches story filled with gratitude and inspiration. Many people learned about him through his plays, movies, or through one of many Oprah shows that he has been on. My nephew, Darren, directed his first movie, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, in 2005.

I wanted to share two main points Tyler mentions that really grabbed me.

Belief in your dream and in having singular focus.

He mentions people who are doing one thing one day, then another thing the next day. His success has come from believing in his singluar dream, and keeping the focus of that one dream.

As you build your business and your life, are you "all over the place" or are you focused on getting to a specific point or place?

Is your singular goal in a picture on your wall, or in words on you [...]

I often write about ways to create success in your business but you can’t add in a bunch of pleasurable strategies without recognizing how you could potentially be sabotaging the good that you are creating.

We are the product of our thoughts and our thoughts can hinder our ability to do all that we are capable of. Unfortunately we are our own worst critics. We are fast to look for what did not work, what we could have done better or what we don’t like about ourselves. We think that focusing only on the good feels “not real”. The negative version feels more “real”. Even though it’s not. In fact if you get evidence you will find that your own opinion is different from others, probably overly negative (in comparison to others view of you) and most likely, just yours.

The challenge is that this has implications for your own success. Meaning your ability to be all that you can be. So I wanted to highlight three habits that you should be avoiding. They will kill your ability to be al [...]
