Have a Custom Facebook Page? FB Is Going to Chop Off Part of It!

    August 17, 2010
  • Notice to all of you who have been savvy enough to mount a custom Facebook tab (page) on your business page!  If you haven't heard already, or if you've not yet taken action, let this be a warning that the day for the change is fast approaching.  Facebook will unilaterally change the width of your carefully constructed custom page from the current 755 pixels down to 520 pixels, effective August 23.

This means that the right side of the image - 31% to be exact, will be cut off.

I've already notified my own clients for whom my firm has created custom FB pages and received an interesting mix of responses.  Some are choosing to have us redesign their existing page asap to fit the new width.  Others are choosing to view this as an "opportunity" to give their custom page a new look, so they've asked us to redesign their page entirely at the same time that we're changing to the narrower width. Still others are waiting to see what happens - on the chance that the angry outcry among Facebook users might lead to a last-minute cancellation of the downsizing plan.

If you have a custom Facebook page, you can see how it will look with the new size by logging into your account and clicking on the custom tab.  Either you'll see a message above the page telling you that the width is going to change, and offering a link to click to see how your page is going to look once Facebook hacks off the right 1/3 of your design, or you'll simply see the page with the right 31% already chopped off.  Either way, rest assured that regular visitors will see the current full view until the August 23 date.

So, be forewarned and be prepared for the change - whether you like it or not!  Oh, also - boxes will be eliminated too, so if you've been using the "Box" tab, check that as well for information on what's going to happen to the contents you've place there.
