Use your Time Wisely + Find Your Rhythm =THRIVE!

    January 25, 2012
  • You may have noticed that I’ve been a bit quieter these past few weeks…this is due to the fact that I have been recruited for a project that requires me to be in an office for twelve weeks. Considering  I haven’t worked in an office for over ten years, this has been quite a switch for me…but what better opportunity than this to test all of the tips and techniques I’ve been sharing with all of you? And, to hone them so they are even more effective? And to develop new ones? YES! What a terrific synchronicity! So, I’m now getting up at 5:00am each morning (which used to be the time I’d roll over when my husband’s alarm went off) and going to the office.

It’s like being in another time zone! Not to mention pitch black outside…and here in Stuttgart, freezing cold in the middle of winter.  But, I digress…

I’ve learned to rearrange my schedule throughout the week and to let go of the need to get everything done, not to mention being perfect. The first week I just held onto my hat and enjoyed the ride, trusting that I would quickly acclimate. Having just completed the second week, I want to share what I have done to hone my systems and organization. For example, here are a few tweaks I’ve made:

Errands: I take full advantage of my lunch hour-I keep an ongoing list as before and now do my errands in the middle of the day. Since it’s cold outside, the car serves as a temporary fridge to store groceries until I get home. I can stop by the post office to mail a package or pick up the dry cleaning. Then, I can eat at my desk while working-which helps me eat slower; chewing and savoring every bite.

Exercise: I park far away from the office so I get a nice brisk walk to and from my desk, twice a day, since I am also running errands at lunch time. I run now on Saturday and Sunday mornings (with my girlfriends whenever possible so we can catch up) and go to the gym 2-3 evenings a week with my husband (gives us together time, an added bonus!).

Time management: I am even more militant (could that be possible?) about leveraging my time and being organized. I make the most of any down time by having paper and pen as well as my list with me at all times. Like to knit? Keep your knitting bag handy. Want to catch up on reading-bring a book with you or listen to books on tape while commuting. I keep my list of things to do in my purse as well as my blog notes, so I can use down time to write my blog.

Speaking of which, I’ll be blogging about this experience over the next few weeks so I can share my AHA’s with you. Meanwhile, I can't wait to hear what you do to fit everything in! How do you find your rhythm and thrive? Please share your comments below!
