"Ah Ha" Moment 1: Dream Bigger!

    May 24, 2010
  • When I started my first business in 1996 - at the age of 12 (;-) wink) - The Emyth was a huge influence.  Here's my Emyth "ah ha" moment #1.

    Dream Bigger

Notice what you are doing today to run your business...are you going to be doing that when you're 85 to support yourself?

This is especially important to answer if you are a solopreneur doing something like consulting, coaching or massage.

It's time to dream bigger - way bigger.  When you are 85, how is money flowing into you?  Where and how are you spending your day.

    Exit Strategy

You're right, it's not your 5 year or 10 year plan...this is your exit strategy.  How does your business run without you?  Even now - how does it run when you:

    • Get sick
    • Take a vacation
    • Hire new people and take time to train them

    Is Your Business An ATM?

    Why NOT?

How does your business make money while you sleep?  Without you being the one providing the "work" that brings in the money?  Do you have product to sell like :
    • Content / Courseware
    • A Book
    • A CD or DVD

It's time - dream bigger.  Dream of how you are out of the day to day and living the life of your dreams.  The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur has fun exercises for the visualization part!  We hired Mike in our 7 Figure Club and had a great time with his exercises.

    The Reality

Does it work?  Only if you start with the dream and the vision.

Back to 1996, I'm reading the Emyth and starting my second company, Intellitest (which later became Vettanna).

Now, I'm really good at software quality assurance and it felt really good getting all the props when "I" showed up and did a consult or training.  But I drank the Emyth koolaid and pimped out the company, not "me the guru".  (I took some other Emyth advice too - more on that next time.)

Bam, we ramped up big and fast in the dotcom gold rush and voila...we had infrastructure in place to support it and OTHER people to do the jobs we were getting, not just me.

Then when I was so sick for awhile, the company kept going without me...it actually grew and did better without me (and still does)!  Major props to my bro, John Flaa, who now runs the day to day of Vettanna so very well!!

Cut back to 2010.  I'm on company #4 and still doing things I learned in the Emyth and encouraging you to...
    • Dream bigger
    • Get an exit strategy
    • Drink the koolaid
It'll be more work at the beginning but it's a really great business decision.

    How are you dreaming bigger?
