The Lead In - How To Start Talking On Your Vlog!

    April 5, 2010
  • Your audience is fickle, they are watching you with their trigger finger on the mouse, ready to click away if you don't engage them right away.

    Woman talking

But, as women, we have a fatal flaw. We (in general) tend to begin talking with either:

    • An Excuse or
    • A Story or Explanation

that eventually leads into the point of what we're saying.  You've now lost your audience.  They clicked in for the point and if you haven't addressed it within the first 15-30 seconds, they're gone.  (If you don't think you do this...double check with your man.  He'll know if you ramble a bit!)

    2 Lead In Strategies

Here's two ideas that will get your vlogs kicking off right on the point.

    1.  Talk -> Smile -> Edit

Some times you just can't do it any other way. You've got to give the excuse, explanation or story in order to bring your own brain into the story. You tell yourself you're laying the foundation or setting them up for the story.  But remember, a vlog isn't a story or a film that has twists and a surprise reveal at the end. Our goal is to share information (in a 3 minute clip) with the end result being you've got a fan or a sale.

So, press record and start talking. When you are done with the excuse or the story:

    Rock The World

    1. Pause
    2. Take a deep breath
    3. Smile pretty (This is your "beauty shot".  I'll talk more about how and why to do this in my vlog workshop at Rock The World).
    4. Now start into the subject or content of the vlog
    5. EDIT. Delete the intro ramble right up to your smile.  So your vlog becomes your smile followed by your content.

    2. Move It

This all means that the most important thing we have to say, our point, is at the very end of our soliloquy. So:
    1. Record yourself (think of this as a "first draft")
    2. Listen intently for what you say at the very end
    3. Now, try starting with that and record again
Let me know how that works for you.
