    When Not To Vlog

    March 26, 2010
  • Once you start vlogging (or blogging) you'll find you put pressure on yourself to deliver regular content.  But there are a few times when you shouldn't vlog.  First, there are 2 types of visitors to your vlog:

    1. The Drop Ins: These are the peeps that are researching something and want a quick answer.  These peeps don't care if you post regularly, they are content driven.  (Until you are established, this is the major viewer or your site.)
    2. Your Fans:  These are the peeps how have subscribed to your RSS feed or who watch for your latest tips. These are the peeps that do like regular info from you.

    When Not To Vlog:

    • In Sickness and In Health -

Nope, only in health please.  Remember, we talkedsick about how anything you do electronically lives forever and we talked about the image you want to project.  When you are sick...you won't be projecting that image!  Trust me on this.  Oh and BTW...that's why this is a blog today and not a video ;-)

DANGER:  You may want to be there for your loyal following. You'll tell yourself that your fans will understand and have compassion for you as you sneeze, cough or migraine yourself through "The Danger of_____" or "The Secret to ______" or "What Your _____ Doesn't Want You To Know About ____"

Stop thinking like this and rest.  It's better to assume that the people who see this will be the drop ins.  If someone only sees one video on your site, do you want it to be the one with your runny nose?  Is that congruent to the image you are working to build?  Nope, now go rest. Your fans will still be there tomorrow...or next week.
    • Ramble On -

Nope, don't do it.  If you haven't figured out a concise bit totalk on communicate don't do it. You are wasting your viewers time.  If your viewers bill out at $120/hr every minute is worth $2.  If you've just rambled for 3 minutes, they could have bought a cup of Peet's.  Was your ramble as relaxing as a cup of steamy, frothy, deliciousness?

DANGER:  This applies to your intro too.  Are you starting out with great content or are you beginning like this: "I'm sorry I didn't vlog on Tuesday, I know that's my normal day.  But here I am on Friday, I hope that's ok."  Nope, you've just wasted 30 minutes or $1.00 of your viewers time.  If this is a first timer to your site, this is where you will loose them. They won't even stick around to see if you've got great content.
So, at the risk of rambling...I'll close now and get back to my sick bed ;-)
