Tip 6: Get support and/or get over it.
Because life happens. Temptations are tough to resist. Cravings can be hard to control. You're having a grand old time and - before you realize it - you've had your third serving of those butter mashed potatoes or fourth glass of wine.
What to do:
* Enlist a good friend or close family member to keep each other in check. Have fun with it. One idea is to have an ongoing bet with fun prizes, where the most points win. For example:
Limit servings to one plate (see Tip 3): 4 points
Skip dessert: 10 points
Each glass of wine: -2 points
Loser cooks a (healthy!) dinner for the winner.
Lose or maintain weight: Priceless!* Start over. Today. Right now.
All is not lost if you started your day having cookies for breakfast. Every moment presents the chance to make a new choice. You had the cookies, I hope you enjoyed them. Now move on! No guilt allowed.
Use this version of the 80/20 rule: What matters is what you do most of the time, not just some of the time. The holidays can be a treat. If you normally eat healthfully and are in good all-around health, don't worry too much if you overindulge for a day - or four - over six weeks' time. On the other hand, if the holidays heighten some existing unhealthy food habits for you and consistently lead to weight gain and other unpleasant side effects that are hard to shake off each year, it's time to heed Tip 4 again.
New Year resolutions, anyone?
To your health!
