  • Branding and Design is one of the vital conversations of our time. Research shows that

➢    A business that increases its investment in design is more than twice as likely to see its turnover grow as a business that does not do so.
➢    34% of businesses that see design as integral or significant say added value has a great impact on their turnover. Where design plays only a limited role, the proportion is just 21%.
➢    Two-thirds of companies who ignore design have to compete mainly on price. In companies where design is integral, just one third do so.
➢    Businesses that add a lot of value are half as likely to compete on price and more than twice as likely to compete on innovation as businesses that rely on their core product or service.

  • How does one contine to invest design dollars smartly in a tough economic climate such as ours? Contrary to popular belief, Design and Marketing SHOULD NOT be the first budgets cut..instead the budget can be stretched and allocated resourcefully to sustain your brand through this time.  I'd love to take questions and share some recommendations on how to make your design dollars work for you!

  • I agree that in an economic down-turn the design and marketing budgets shouldn’t be the first ones cut and, if anything, they should be beefed up. Never is it more important to refine your company’s message and put it out there in front of as many eyes as possible.

The best way to save money on design and marketing is through partnerships. Partnering with companies that offer services you need such as logo design, business card design, website design, online marketing and pr services is key. In the past, this has been called bartering but I caution you not to use that term as it calls up images of one or the other partner getting short-changed on the deal. Imagine the logo designer who did her best work to design a $1500 logo only to receive a hand-printed t-shirt in exchange. Not a good situation.

In a new partnership, both companies get to negotiate a deal that benefits everyone. In addition to getting what’s needed at a discounted rate, both businesses can get exposure to the other business’s network. This is priceless and should be included in every partnering deal. Taking advantage of the other business’s network might mean including the opportunity to send a message to their Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter network or email mailing list. The key to striking up good partnerships is to not be afraid to approach someone who you don’t know. It can be someone who’s work you admire. You can send a simple email introducing yourself. And both parties must be completely honest about the dollar value of their services/products. Otherwise, false judgements and assumptions might derail the agreement.

By partnering up with other businesswomen we can make it through this slow time. We can get what we need, make some money and maybe come away with some new friends. Best of luck to everyone!

  • Hey Cam - Great response and insights on this topic. PixInk looks to nurture strategic partnerships and this has been one of the main reason's we've been able to 'create our own economy' in 2009. Thanks for the amazing info.

    Warm regards,
    Ayesha

  • Hi Cam that was a very insightful suggestion. I am actually partnering with another PR company to plan a fashion event next year. It's amazing what our network outreach is together. Thank you.

  • Thanks everybody for writing in this helpful information. I agree with the above wholeheartedly. So many times clients don't realize that even though the economy is down and their business has slowed up, if they don't advertise even a little bit, how are they going to attract new customers?

I'm working with the Jersey City SID and have been interviewed for the local paper where we talked about economical ways businesses can bring in more business by thinking globally instead of locally. It's amazing how many small businesses don't have a website or any presence on the web. It's my goal to help these businesses realize their potential!

    :)
