  • Hi Savor Sisters!

I'm still pretty new to Savor, but I'm really loving it!  I've watched all of Payson's marketing and Melissa's PR videos and am responding to several HARO queries each week.

But, I have a question about niche marketing/branding -- is it better to go narrow or broad if you want to get PR?

My blog is currently geared toward singles, primarily women.  Though my more focused brand/market is recently divorced women looking for love. I even got the domain name: FineLoveAfterDivorce.com (though I'm not using it yet).

It seems like the PR queries work best if I keep my own brand broader, but I've always heard -- go narrow and that's what I heard on Payson's marketing videos, too.

I didn't want to make any major changes till I take Melissa's 6-week seminar in the Spring.  But, I am getting regular replies to my HARO media pitches and I wondered if I should go ahead and focus my brand now.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Vondie

  • Oh and I forgot to mention.  I've done about 6 or 7 media pitches and had 2 picked up so far!

  • Hi Vondie,

Your PR strategy should complement your marketing strategy but ultimately your media brand is separate. What the media reacts to and is interested in is typically much broader and widely appealing than your niche brand. So you'll have a lot of success positioning your media brand as a "Relationship Expert" where your consumer brand might be "sexy love tips for singles" - more focused and niche.

This also depends on the long term goals you have in mind. Many of my clients want to land book deals, have a TV show, become paid professional speakers, or become a brand spokesperson. In order to do these things it's imperative to have widespread appeal.

    Hope that helps!

  • Thank-you Melissa!

My long-term goals would be to be a paid professional speaker, have book deals, (and who knows about a T.V. show!)

  • Hey Vondie,

My response would have been similar to Melissa's and I would have asked her to chime in - so, seems like you have the answer. :-) I absolutely agree - over all, it should all line up, but PR is a special type of marketing and isn't always the same as the messaging you use for marketing directly to potential clients.

    Happy Holidays! :-)

  • Thanks Payson & Melissa!

Just to clarify, I use my blog/newsletter/social networking as my primary means of marketing.  I think you're both saying, it's okay for that to be more narrow. ie. singles or divorced women...

But, I'm not sure how to position myself more broadly  for P.R. other than on my press page and in my individual media pitches.

Or would it be better for my blog/brand to also be broader?

(Melissa, if this is too much for a cafe question, let me know... still getting the hang of savor.  maybe this is some of the branding we can explore further in the spring.  I'm just guessing I'll be getting more P.R. with Valentines approaching and I was wondering how to make the most of it!  :)

    Thanks,

    Vondie
