I’m the accidental entrepreneur. I was a life long employee, happy to be so, and couldn’t have imagined anything else. In 1981, I found myself working at a major teaching medical center in Los Angeles and for the following 14 years, held a variety of non-clinical positions. If you’ve never had one, cold sores appear on the lips. They’re painful, but much worse, they don’t make for an attractive eruption which hits right in the line of vision for anyone looking at you.

A few years earlier, in exasperation, I was inspired to find something that would diminish the severity of my outbreaks. With no science background, I researched herbs that might be helpful in the early stage of an infection, and found information that looked promising. After buying some raw materials, mixed up a batch of crunchy goo in my kitchen and waited for the time I would next feel the early warning symptom of an impending cold sore, a ‘tingling’ sensation on the lip. That day came, I applied a small amount of the herbal mixture, and in disbelief, the eruption never materialized. The same result was achieved every time, not just for myself, but for friends and relatives who were similarly affected.

So, in 1995 when I was in my mid-forties and out of work, I decided to market this remedy to the natural products industry. The product is now called Cold Sores Begone™, and another remedy followed for sores inside the mouth, Canker Sores Begone™.

Perhaps because over half the world’s population are affected by these mouth sores, my line became a success.
